Is Reindeer Moss not a moss?

Reindeer Moss

This name is the most commonly used and well-known in the world, but in reality, it is a type of lichen - Cladonia Stellaris. Therefore, it is not just an ordinary moss growing on rocks, peat or trees in our common forests. It is even one of the subspecies of lichen. Lichen is a symbiosis of fungi and algae. It is naturally light gray with a greenish tinge. It does not have a proper root system and absorbs moisture from humid air, and takes nutrients directly from the air. But let's stick to its name - Reindeer Moss.

Origin of Reindeer Moss

The natural habitat of Reindeer Moss is the Arctic regions of northern countries, where it forms extensive carpets. It grows on the surface of bare soil or gravel in the harsh environment of coniferous forests. Therefore, it cannot be grown in any other environment. The Reindeer Moss we use is always collected by hand. Not only to ensure that it does not disappear completely after harvesting, but also to grow back as quickly as possible. And this is ensured precisely by gentle manual harvesting. Harvesting Reindeer Moss does not harm the reindeer either. Although reindeer have it in their diet, hence the name, they live in other areas of the country where harvesting is not allowed.

And finally, Reindeer Moss is not a moss or even reindeer. What is a fact, though, is that it is a 100% natural product. See for yourself when looking at our moss pictures in the offer.
